Originally from the Savoie, the Bize family has produced wines in Savigny-les-Beaune since 1880. More than a century later, following the footsteps of his ancestors, Patrick Bize took over the estate in 1988. Without any formal training, and overcoming an initial reluctance to work in the vineyards or the cellar, he gradually came to love his work. Over the years the Bize family has built up the finest Domaine in Savigny-les-Beaune. With the assistance of talented winemaker, Guillaume Bott, previously of Domaine Etienne Sauzet in Puligny, they now share the running of the estate. He is careful in his use of oak in order to preserve the inherent elegance and balance of fruit in his wines. He maintains a flexible approach when determining how long to age each wine in barrel, meticulously following the evolution of each wine and adjusting the maturation according to the richness and weight of each cuvée. Patrick enjoys the respect and admiration of his peers and friends, among whom are such luminaries as Jean-Marie Raveneau and Christophe Roumier. His village may not enjoy the rock-star status of Puligny or Vosne but over the last 20 years, Patrick has crafted vintage after vintage of wines that over-achieve on their origins, rather than fall short of their potential. Which would you rather have?
Burgundy has always fascinated and frustrated in equal measure. For every eulogising, life-changing proclamation from someone realising wine nirvana, there is some poor soul somewhere bashing their head in perplexity. At its best, Burgundy can provide the ultimate- the transcendental, mystifying, unexplainable pleasure that only truly great wine can bring. But at its worst, it can be an expensive mistake, bring disillusion and even provoke anger.
For sure, Burgundy is not the region of choice for the unadventurous or risk averse! How then to navigate the minefield? Our advice has always been, and still is, to get to know the growers. It sounds like simple advice but with so many producers, from powerful négociant houses to the new breed of micro négociants, from large, historic estates to tiny family domaines, you need to know where to turn and who can be relied upon.
