Scores

Subtle ripe aromas of dried berries, spices and cedar follow through to a full body with pretty tannins and a juicy finish. Tight now. One of the best second wines of Sassicaia. Try in 2016. Score: 92 points James Suckling

Tasting Notes

Le Difese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Sangiovese (30%). An instantly appealing wine, with lovely depth and length, the bouquet is ripe and sweet with bright red cherry fruit characters and notes of sweet herbs. Succulent cassis flavours on the palate are balanced by fine tannins and a refined mineral quality. This wine is delicious young but it will age well for the next five years or so. Drink 2014 ? 2019.

ProducerTenuta San Guido

Quietly, elegantly and almost involuntarily, the Incisa della Rocchetta family set to release the wine that would revolutionise the Italian wine scene creating a totally new genre: the Super-Tuscan. Tenuta San Guido is now a legendary estate and was first planted in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who noted the similarity between Bolgheri’s terroir and that of the Graves. When, in 1968, Sassicaia was finally commercially released, it took the fine wine world by storm. Cementing its iconic status, in 1994 it was granted its own appellation – Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
