Barolo 2013: Exciting wines from Castiglione Falletto & Serralunga d’Alba

In 2013, both Castiglione and Serralunga confirmed their reputation for some of the most exciting and consistent wines in the region.

The Barolos from Castiglione Falletto tend to be profound and varied, owing to the complex limestone-rich Helvetian soils found here. Hailing from the spectacular crus of Monprivato, Rocche di Castiglione, Bricco Boschis and Villero, these are wines that impress for their combination of incredible perfume and brawny structure.

The elegance and sheer power of Serralunga d’Alba’s wines provide a remarkable counterpoint to its neighbour. The vineyards here are high and steep; the best crus face due-south. This crucial combination contributes to a prolonged growing season, yielding some of the most austere and powerfully structured Barolos from the revered sites of Falletto, Vigna Rionda, Francia, Cerretta and Prapò. In a vintage like 2013, the wines will evolve for decades.

Below we have a wine from the outstanding and sought-after Cavallotto in Castiglione, while from Serralunga, we present Schiavenza, an under-the-radar yet quintessential producer in an enviable position atop the Cerretta hill.

Cavallotto may very well be the greatest Barolo producer few people have ever heard of, something that continues to mystify me”, Antonio Galloni

The name Cavallotto is synonymous with Bricco Boschis, its magnificent monopole vineyard opposite the famed Monprivato. It’s as traditional as Barolo comes: from the approach in the vineyard to four, long years resting in the cellars beneath the vineyard itself. The deep, dark and concentrated fruit is scented with liqueur cherries, truffle and minerals. Powerful, compact tannins combine with an electric freshness to create a truly memorable 2013 Barolo. There is a herbal, blackcurrant quality beneath the wild and impressive texture. This 2013 Bricco Boschis is one of the wines of the vintage and hard to find in the UK. If you don’t know Cavallotto, now’s your chance. It may not come around again.

Schiavenza’s vineyards occupy enviable positions in the great sites of Serralanga d’Alba close to many of the illustrious names of the region. These wines are a masterclass in how Nebbiolo can express its precise origin”, Richard Ballantyne MW

This archetypal Serralunga property produces traditional Barolos that sing of their terroir. Broglio is on the eastern ridge of Serralunga d’Alba and is well exposed to the morning sun giving the wines density and ripeness, unlike their Cerretta which is higher up the hill and more restrained in style. Dark fruits combine with the tell-tale coffee liqueur notes of Serralunga reinforced with dense but rounded tannins. And the noble acidity always found in the good sites of this commune is compelling. For lovers of classically built Barolo, this producer is not to be missed. And the price is simply irresistible.
