Premier Cru Red Releases: Burgundy En Primeur 2019

#Lavignecontinue…

It is with great pleasure that we offer our first tranche of 1er Crus from Burgundy, beginning with the superlative reds.

As our Master Sommelier Nicolas Clerc wrote in his vintage report here, the singularity and precision of the 2019 reds is genuinely striking. You can buy the red wines across appellations and price points with absolute confidence, such is the outstanding quality.

In 2019, the singularity of vineyard and terroir shines through – and what better way to experience this typicity than through the fascinating and utterly delicious complexities of Burgundy’s 1er Cru vineyards?

We heard on a number of occasions reference to the 1989 vintage, a year of exceptional reds defined by balance and approachability in youth, but with all the concentration of fruit to reward time in the cellar.

Of course, if you wish to discuss any wine in particular, or would like further guidance, then please do not hesitate to contact the Private Client Team. We look forward to hearing from you!

Stay tuned for the second tranche of white burgundy releases on Friday 8th January!

Ripe, generous dark fruit but this Clos des Chênes needs time to find itself. Neal Martin: "quite broody on the nose and demanded coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing black plum and raspberry fruit, sous-bois and light floral scents… An elegant, well-crafted Clos des Chênes that will just need 2–3 years to open."

From 50 year old vines. Dark, ripe fruit - very enticing. Neal Martin writes: "expressive, floral bouquet featuring touches of kirsch and orange blossom; this is one of the most opulent crus." 2/3 whole clusters.

Restrained, shy and closed at the moment. Neal Martin says: "much more broody and backward on the nose compared to the Les Perrières, the fruit slightly darker. The palate is medium-bodied with ferrous-tinged red fruit, a little fuller than Les Perrières". There's lots of potential here.

Floral and delicate. With a potential 95 Points, Neal Martin writes: "a very focused bouquet of elegant red cherry, raspberry and briary aromas, plus a hint of bay leaf and sous-bois... superb tension and focus toward the finish. A gorgeous, ethereal Aux Thorey."

Ripe and floral on the nose. The palate is very tense and grippy. Neal Martin writes: "layers of red cherries, crushed strawberry and cassis fruit... A burly Volnay with good grip, though it shuts down completely on the finish. Give this 4–5 years in bottle." Huge potential.

Quite Volnay in style - very floral and elegant. Neal Martin: "The palate is beautifully balanced, the 50% whole cluster contributing a light pepperiness but allowing the terroir to shine. Smooth on the finish."

Open and ripe on the nose, briny and mineral on the palate. Neal Martin says: "The 100% whole cluster lends some black pepper and clove notes to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good density and grip and a bold but balanced, slightly earthy, spicy finish. Good potential but it will need time."
