Châteauneuf du Pape 2016: An Exceptional Vintage

We are pleased to offer Château de Beaucastel and Vieux Télégraphe from the unmissable 2016 harvest.

2016 is an outstanding vintage in the Southern Rhone, providing the region with two back to back years of excellent quality. Many growers have in fact favoured 2016 over 2015, citing its similarities to the great 2010 and even 1990.

Conditions in the south were ideal all year, with warm, dry days balanced by cool nights. This has produced wines with a superb balance of maturity, richness and fine acidity; all held together with big, firm tannic structures, that mean these wines will go the distance.

2016 will certainly be a vintage to keep and we expect demand to be high. These wines, from two of the region’s great names, deserve their place in your cellar.

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge
£240 Per 6 Bottles In Bond
Deep ruby in appearance the nose is very fresh, with notes of chocolate, loads of dark cherries and a black forest gâteau-like sweetness, transcended by Beaucastel’s hallmark lift and elegance. The mouth is round and reveals ripe fruit, soft tannins and good length. Gorgeous, effortless acidity and balance.

Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc
£240 Per 6 Bottles In Bond
There is a brilliant balance between rich fleshy stone fruits and finely poised freshness in this vintage. This is a juicy and vibrant wine with an engaging richness. The aroma here is restrained, youthful and nervy with a hint of nut, quince and crushed white flowers. The palate has a nut-oil quality alongside beautiful apricot, white peach and pear, culminating in an excellent finish layered with rocky minerals.

Roussanne Vieilles Vignes Blanc
£220 Per 3 Bottles In Bond
Another astounding white wine from the Perrin family; Roussanne Vieilles Vignes Blanc is fully deserving of its cult status. Incredibly complex but not over-done. Rich, ripe and rounded on the nose, displaying white flowers, clove, nutmeg, soft white peach and a touch of aniseed. There is unmistakable minerality and intensity on the palate with an all-consuming flavour profile. This is certainly one of the world’s most interesting and rewarding white wines. Perfect pedigree.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Gigondas les Racines, Terrasses du Diable, Domaine les Pallières
£99 Per 6 Bottles In Bond
This property, bought by the Brunier brothers of Vieux Télégraphe, is a superb domaine in the Dentelles de Montmirail, producing fine Gigondas of impeccable character. The 2016 is seriously dense with fine peppery spice and brooding dark fruit; its fresh scrubland aromas are offset by an upfront tannic structure. In short, a serious and complete wine at exceptional value for money.

Châteauneuf du Pape, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
£240 Per 6 Bottles In Bond
La Crau is Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s single greatest cru and Vieux Télégraphe’s very old vines on this famously rocky outcrop impart incredible density and power to its flagship wine. The 2016 is stunningly poised with a beguiling freshness; it has a faint aroma of red roses. On the palate there is lush, elegant berry fruit alongside a richness and serious structure. One of the greatest Châteauneufs of the last decade at this consistently excellent estate.

Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, Clos la Roquète
£175 Per 6 Bottles In Bond
This estate was bought by the Bruniers of Vieux Télégraphe in 1986. Just a small parcel called Clos La Roquète was planted to white; a blend of Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc and Clairette with a savoury lick of oak. This 2016 Clos la Roquète has appealing stone fruit presence, with clean lines and freshness, complemented by a faint grapefruit tang on the finish.
