Masseto long ago transcended simply being a “Bordeaux-style wine from Tuscany”, and was quite obviously something special right from the beginning. Established alongside Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in the 1980’s by Ludovico Antinori, one of the godfathers of the Super Tuscans, this wine’s lineage has been quite noble even in its relatively short history. The 7ha single vineyard was identified as prime Merlot territory by legendary California wine maker Andre Tchelistcheff, “America’s most influential post-prohibition winemaker”, and from 1991 to present day has been stewarded by the omnipotent Michel Rolland. This wine is an entity unto itself – not simply Tuscany, not simply Merlot, not simply a Michel Rolland wine, but much greater than the sum of its parts
