The Rhône valley has been at the epicentre of wine culture since Ancient Greece. Indeed, it was initially established by the Greeks themselves before later becoming the Roman’s highway into France. They planted several vineyards along the way and shaped the region’s landscape close to what it looks like today.
When referring to the Rhône, we usually talk about the North and the South and within both ends of the valley, there are a number of communes and different grape varieties which are used to create a rich and diverse set of wines.
The steep terraces of the Northern Rhône are where some of the finest wines can be found in the valley. Considered to be the birthplace of Syrah, they produce expressions of this variety that are at the very height of elegance. However, whilst the quality is as good here as any other region in France, these wines don’t receive the same hype and acclaim as the Burgundians or Bordelais and therefore they don’t demand the same eye-watering prices; a welcome benefit to lovers of these wines.
Down South, the valley starts to widen and the climate becomes more Provençal with a Mediterranean influence in both culture and temperature. Grenache rules here and forms the foundation for many of the region’s AOC wines, of which the most famous is Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
This region is a source of some beguiling wines from both a white and red perspective. Although few can be considered as investments, this is great hunting ground for those looking to increase their drinking pleasure.
