FRANCE

France benefits from a range of locations and climates that are suitable for growing wines, resulting in a diverse range of varieties and styles. Emphasis remains as much on tradition as technology, with particular significance placed on the expression of terroir. The finest wine-producing regions are Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhône.

Other significant areas include Alsace, Beaujolais, Chablis, Jura, Loire, and south west France. A predominantly red wine-producing country, less than a quarter of all wine consumed in France is white.

TASTING NOTES

From a significant 1er Cru beneath Malconsorts and touching La Tâche, this is always a generous cuvée with abundant fruit, plenty of flesh and juicy tannins. Glossy in appearance, this is charming and open on the nose with persistence and plenty of style on the finish. Drink from 2013.

TASTING NOTES

A wine of red fruits and a lithe, elegant style, this combines redcurrant and raspberry with a little white pepper and lovely silky textures. No more than mid-weight (but important to note that all Moueix wines are tasted without press wine added), the style is generally gentle and relaxed but never escaping a certain austerity and rigour running through as...

TASTING NOTES

Absolutely outstanding. This low dosage cuvée captures the brilliance of 2008. Classic Gimonnet: racy, driving and mineral with real delicacy. This blossoms in the glass to reveal an underlying seriousness which will unravel with age. Spectacular today but with a big future.Armit Wines

TASTING NOTES

Bright, smoky red and black fruit provides a subtle floral lift. The palate is very fine, with a lovely velvety grip and fresh mouth-watering acidity. Dark wild fruits and a hint of liquorice spice on the palate show lovely density and richness before the long, supple finish. Drink from 2022.Armit Wines

The most widely planted variety of French wine is Carignan, with other significant red varieties being Grenache, Merlot, Cinsaut and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ugni Blanc dominates the white grape plantings as the main variety used in the production of Cognac. The other principal white French wine varieties are Chardonnay and Sémillon.
