FRANCE

France benefits from a range of locations and climates that are suitable for growing wines, resulting in a diverse range of varieties and styles. Emphasis remains as much on tradition as technology, with particular significance placed on the expression of terroir. The finest wine-producing regions are Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhône.

Other significant areas include Alsace, Beaujolais, Chablis, Jura, Loire, and south west France. A predominantly red wine-producing country, less than a quarter of all wine consumed in France is white.

2016 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux

Domaine Huet

In Stock

Bottle 75cl £38.68

Case of 6 £232.08

TASTING NOTES

A notch up in intensity from its Haut-Lieu sibling; pink grapefruit and bergamot vie for attention here.  This Clos du Bourg Moelleux is so complex and thrilling, it envelopes the senses in orange blossom, patisserie, melon and spice.  If it weren’t for the fantastic acidity, the concentration here would be almost liqueur-esque in depth, but that nervy energy comes through...

TASTING NOTES

As JB said when we tasted together, “No comment, it is great”.  Many a true word said in jest.  The Le Mont Moelleux is exceptional and has a long life to come.  Rich texture leads in to a massive wave of green apple and spice.  It is supported by minerality, freshness and smokey, savoury inflections.  This is a wine with...

Bottle 75cl £38.68

Case of 6 £232.08

TASTING NOTES

This is an almost nostalgic wine that hints at childhood memories of baked apple, honeyed raisin, pear drop and fresh apple sauce.  Nuanced layers emerge with grapefruit pith and juicy conference pear alongside spun sugar, nectarine, and white peach.  Its soaring crest of acidity cleanses all the plump sugared fruit and marries beautifully with the accents of spicy botrytised apricot....

TASTING NOTES

The nose of this Champagne is a spring bouquet: rose, wild strawberry, raspberry and later blackberry, combine perfectly to offer the taster aromas, which would be unexpected in a normal rosé Champagne. The mouth follows on from the nose, with the structure of the Pinot Noir leaving at a convincing vinosity at the finish. By virtue of its freshness, this...

TASTING NOTES

85% Merlot/15% Cabernet Franc. First impressions are focused on fresh fruit, a lovely nose of red and black berries that still retain a certain crunchiness. On the palate, there is remarkable precision as well as a creamy texture, a charming combination. The ripe Merlot marries beautifully with the more alert Cabernet Franc and it’s the quality of the tannins that...

FRENCH WINE

The most widely planted variety of French wine is Carignan, with other significant red varieties being Grenache, Merlot, Cinsaut and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ugni Blanc dominates the white grape plantings as the main variety used in the production of Cognac. The other principal white French wine varieties are Chardonnay and Sémillon.

FRENCH WINE REGIONS

The variety of conditions between, and even within, the main French wine regions, is what makes wine in France so diverse and exciting. Select robust reds from Rhône, fresh whites and sparkling wines from the Loire Valley. Or revel in the warmth of the Mediterranean coast, where sun-drenched vines produce fruity reds and refreshing rosés from Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence in the South of France.
