South Africa has always been regarded as a New World wine producing region, despite the fact that the first grapes were pressed for winemaking in 1659. The Modern South African wine industry as we know it today could be said to be little over a decade old; apartheid rule isolated the country from international trading for decades and there have been remarkable developments and a rapid catch up since the advent of democracy in 1994. Between1995 to 1997 alone, exports increased by 335%.
There are now over 600 wine producers in South Africa, a figure that has doubled since 2000, and the country is now the ninth largest producer of wines worldwide. Empowerment has also been a key element in the development and today over 100,000 people from historically disadvantaged groups are now employed in the wine industry.

Stellenbosch is a great place to start when it comes to South African wine. The centre of the country’s winemaking world, established in 1679, the region is best known for producing South African red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Pinotage. The climate is tempered by the nearby Atlantic Ocean and drier than South Africa’s other wine-producing regions. Can you scent and taste all that in a 2009 Grand Vin?
At the other end of the scale – and on the other side of Cape Town – is Swartland. Warmer than Stellenbosch, it’s also the country’s youngest wine producing region and famous for its South African white wines like this 2013 Aristargos from David & Nadia.
Located in Stellenbosch, the Mulderbosch winery is owned and operated by winemaker Adam Mason and his team. Building on a reputation for quality, especially in their white wines, the team has taken things a step further recently by creating special releases of single-vineyard Chenin Blancs and even a Cabernet Sauvignon rosé.
In Delaire Graff, you’ll find the fusion of two South African success stories: wine and diamonds. When Laurence Graff OBE, Graff Diamonds’ chairman, acquired the Delaire vineyards in 2003, winemaker Morné Vrey began to produce award-winning Bordeaux, Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs like this 2017 Sauvignon – which Armit Wines has been proudly importing to the UK since 2012.
