Domaine Sébastien Dampt 2016 - A small crop of great quality

Domaine Sébastien Dampt is situated in Milly to the west of Chablis and fifty percent of the holdings are in 1ers Crus. The winery is surrounded by vines with beautiful views of the vineyards of Vaillons and Les Lys. Sébastien worked with his father Daniel before creating his own domaine in 2007. Most of his wines are fermented in stainless steel to retain an elegant purity and freshness which are the hallmarks of his style. A highly innovative and progressive wine maker, Sébastien has introduced a concrete egg to vinify one of his most sought-after cuvées, Les Beugnons 1er Cru, which adds complexity and depth through micro oxygenation without any oak influence from barrels.

Sébastien is one of those producers who are able to produce brilliant wines year after year despite the challenges of vintages such as 2016. A cold spring was accompanied by severe frosts in 2016, the worst in twenty years, which reduced the yield from the beginning. This was followed by a period of rain, which caused mildew, and the flowering was late. August by contrast was extremely hot which burned some vines. The situation looked distinctly unpromising at this stage. Luckily the weather in September was sunny and conditions were almost perfect during the harvest. Yields were reduced by at least 50% but the grapes achieved excellent levels of ripeness. As a result, according to Sébastien, “the wines are very concentrated but they have great elegance and lovely freshness which will allow them to age well”.

We couldn't recommend these wines more highly. These wonderfully succulent, crisp Chablis’ have all the freshness one could want allied to an appealing hint of richness from the 2016 vintage. Absolutely delicious now, not to mention seriously moreish, they offer a great deal of pleasure already and will continue to do so for years to come.

Prices are offered in-bond at a special release price until the end of August.

TASTING NOTES

Produced from a south facing parcel at the extreme south of Les Vaillons, this unique wine is vinified in a concrete egg to give an additional layer of complexity. The shape of the egg creates a circulating effect for the lees while the porosity of the surface allows for micro-oxidation like a barrique but without any woody characters. The beautifully...
