Maison Deux Montille’s (a play on words, get it?) focus is exclusively on white wines, buying in grapes from not only impressive 1er Cru vineyards in Meursault, but also excellent Lieux-Dits in some of the satellites villages around the Côte de Beaune. The project combines the genius and pioneering instincts of Étienne, who has been in charge of the Domaine since 2001, with the obvious wine making talent of his capable sister who has learned a thing or two from her husband Jean-Marc Roulot. Together they have produced a range of beautiful wines which represent "outstanding" value – a combination proving harder and harder to find in Burgundy

Ably assisted by chef de cave Brian Sieve, Etienne looks after the red wines while Alix takes care of the whites but in 2003, they decided to add further whites to the portfolio through the establishment of a négociant business, Deux Montille Soeur Frère.

Both Alix and Etienne are firmly of the belief that great Burgundy must speak of its origins but that it also must be a wine in tune with the needs of today's consumer. It is fair to say that the Domaine wines in the past could be hard in their youth, needing a minimum of ten years to open out and Etienne in particular has worked hard on the reds to encourage a little more tenderness and expression of fruit.

It is a rather lovely to see two siblings working so well together and the success that they have enjoyed to date stems from the harmony of their working relationship and from the rich winemaking talent that clearly runs in the blood of the family.

Rather than concentrate solely on Grand Cru glamour, the range has at its core the fantastic value wines of villages such as Auxey Duresses, St Romain and St Aubin as well as access to some of the most recherché sites such as Corton Charlemagne and Meursault Poruzots. Alix and Etienne make the majority of their purchases in the form of fruit, rather than must, and wherever possible they are involved in the vineyards in order to guarantee a crop that is bespoke to their requirements.
