Gaja 2014 Barbaresco: Wonderfully Elegant and Complex
Gaja’s Barbarescos need no introduction. They are truly magnificent. Whilst the single vineyard Barbarescos of Gaja express the singularity of their terroir, the Barbaresco normale offers an incredible insight into the wider brilliance of this commune. It is exactly for this reason that it has become a firm favourite amongst collectors. Cherished for its astounding ability to deliver the utmost quality in abundance year after year, space in the cellar should be made for each and every release of this wine. As such, we are exceedingly pleased to release Gaja’s Barbaresco 2014.
Following a difficult Summer, Autumn provided ideal conditions with sunny weather and moderate temperatures – especially favourable for the late-ripening Nebbiolo. Unlike 2013, which according to Gaia Gaja, created “large berries with little juice”, the grapes in 2014 had relatively thick skins so the wines are slightly deeper with succulent, pure fruit flavours and a firmer structure. This Barbaresco is made from a blend of fourteen different vineyards and is aged for one year in a mixture of new and used barriques and then a further year in large Slavonian casks. It is a wonderfully elegant and complex wine with terrific structure suggesting this will be a very age-worthy wine indeed.
Gaja’s wines have long been a benchmark for Piedmont and are a beacon of winemaking skill for Italy. This awe inspiring range of wines ranks amongst the finest wines produced in the World. Whilst the rare and highly collectible single vineyards are strictly allocated, this is an opportunity to experience the hedonism and decadence of Gaja’s wines at the first release of the Barbaresco 2014.
