Gaja Conteisa and Sperss: Thrilling Young Barolos
We are delighted to offer the much anticipated 2014 Barolo releases from Gaja.
Conteisa, from the Cerequio vineyard in La Morra, and Sperss from Serralunga, contained up to 10% Barbera in their blends before the 2013 vintage but they are now 100% Nebbiolo and proudly say ‘Barolo’ on the label. These Barolos continue a stylistic shift that has been happening at this great estate over the past few years. The wines are showing even greater finesse and focus with the beautiful quality of the Nebbiolo fruit very much centre-stage. The results are breathtaking.
The 2014 vintage will be remembered as one of the most complex and surprising vintages of the last ten years, but the quality of the wines at the top end has stunned the critics with Galloni saying “the finest 2014s are some of the most thrilling young Barolos I have ever tasted.” Conditions were a little cooler and more humid than normal during the summer, but the weather improved from mid-September which allowed the grapes to develop perfect levels of ripeness. The fruit brought into the winery was beautifully ripe and healthy with thick skins. As a result, the 2014s have wonderful purity and finesse and each terroir shows through beautifully in these crystalline wines. Conteisa displays its characteristic charm and finesse while the power and definition of Serralunga comes through in the Sperss. Despite being surprisingly approachable already, these wines will reward patience and develop layers of elegant complexity over the years ahead.
Quantities, inevitably, are limited so please contact us as soon as possible to secure your allocation. Priority will be given to buyers of both wines.
