Gaja Conteisa and Sperss 2013 - Wines of Serene Purity and Finesse

We are delighted to be releasing Conteisa and Sperss 2013 from Gaja. In Barolo, 2013 was an “outstanding” vintage according to the Wine Advocate and Antonio Galloni describes them as “gorgeous Barolos with striking aromatics, silky tannins, sculpted, vibrant fruit and mid-weight structures”. It is surely one of the best vintages since the ethereal 2010s.

Conditions were a little cooler than usual during the growing season which contributed to a late harvest, allowing the grapes to develop perfect levels of ripeness. These are wines of serene purity and finesse, and some of the “most elegant wines I have seen” according to Gaia Gaja. Each terroir shows through beautifully in these complex and crystalline wines. Conteisa from the Cerequio vineyard in La Morra displays its characteristic charm and finesse while the power and depth of Serralunga comes through in the Sperss.

In past vintages, Gaja blended a small percentage of Barbera into the single vineyard wines but from 2013 they are 100% Nebbiolo to achieve the purest expression of Nebbiolo, qualities which are truly revealed in these exceptional wines. Despite their approachability now, Conteisa and Sperss 2013 require patience and will evolve layers of delicate complexity over the years ahead.
