Italian Icon Sassicia 2014 is Here

“One of the world’s great wines and an extraordinarily elegant expression of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grown in Italy”
Robert Parker

Sassicaia is not only an Italian icon; it is a giant in the world of Fine Wine that rightly deserves its place at the top table of the world’s best wines. Sassicaia stretches the imagination beyond a singular triumphant vintage, award or figurehead. Great wines start with great vineyards that produce outstanding fruit year on year and, with its unique micro-climate, Sassicaia has stood above its peers regardless of the hand dealt from Mother Nature with its proven track record of producing excellent wines in tougher conditions. To prove that, we revisited the 2005 Sassicaia (93 Parker points) last week which was showing beautifully, a perfect example of Sassicaia managing to produce stunning wines of harmony, perfume and impeccable balance every vintage. This does not go unnoticed by the market with the 2005 price currently at £800 per 6 bottles in bond, highlighting the attraction of securing an allocation at release price each year.

“Sassicaia remains the most classic of the big Tuscan wines, with an emphasis on aromatic freshness and acidity that is the result of picking earlier than is common in most neighboring properties.”
Antonio Galloni

We have no doubt that serious wine collectors should make considerable space in their cellar for Sassicaia year on year. We are lucky enough to regularly revisit older vintages and having recently tasted the likes of 2005, 2004, 1999, 1998 and 1988 (challenging years which all scored 93 points or below), as well as the 2014 from barrel and more recently bottle, this leaves us with no doubt that the 2014 vintage will provide a wine with appealing aromatics and enough flesh to realise Sassicaia’s considerable ageing potential, continuing the estate’s impeccable record of consistency.

In addition to Sassicaia, we are extremely proud to offer Guidalberto 2015 and Le Difese 2015. This offers an early glimpse into the excellent 2015 vintage which has produced wines of great generosity, elegant tannins and wonderful freshness.

"A new winery is in the works that will be dedicated exclusively to Guidalberto, a wine that in the best years has its own distinct personality."
Antonio Galloni

Guidalberto is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that carries the hallmark elegance and finesse that runs through Sassicaia, the sweet fruited Tuscan character of the Bolgheri area and the beguiling aromas that Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are capable of creating together. Spending twenty months in one-third new oak barrels, this wine is irresistible two years from release yet has a proven track record of ageing well into a decade.

Le Difese is a nod towards the indigenous varieties of the region combining the appealing Mediterranean characteristics of Sangiovese with the depth of Cabernet Sauvignon to make a delicious wine that is ready to be enjoyed from release.

Brief History about the Iconic Sassicia
In the 1940’s, a project of passion was born when the truly visionary Marchese Mario Incisa Della Rochetta realised the vast potential of Bordeaux varieties in Bolgheri, a coastal area of Tuscany previously unknown for its wine production. This project was honed over twenty years and only shared with close friends and neighbours at the time. However, the great quality on display could not be kept a secret forever and eventually under immense pressure from their peers the family released the first commercial vintage of Sassicaia in 1968. Since then, accolades and acclaim have followed one of the most profound Cabernet dominant wines in the world to become the flagship Super Tuscan, and arguably Italy’s most important wine.
