Mulderbosch Single Vineyard Chenin: The National Hero of South Africa

We are pleased to introduce the single vineyard Chenin Blanc range from Mulderbosch. The wines show the subtle distinctions the grape can take on depending upon its site, dictated by altitude, soil type and distance from the sea.

Having been led through the range by Mulderbosch winemaker Adam Mason, we were fascinated to discover the differences between the wines for ourselves.

The sole defining factor between each of these wines is the terroir as the winemaking process is the same for each wine. The grapes from each vineyard are whole bunch pressed and vinified for ten months in French oak barrels with meticulous care to allow the soils to speak for themselves. The 2016 vintage was hot and dry, leading the vines to struggle and draw on reserves deep in the ground furnishing them with the unique characters of their landscapes.

Block A - Sandstone - 7-8km to ocean – 215m above sea level - Aromatic, floral, nervy

As the national hero of South Africa, this Chenin Blanc from Blocks A, S2 and W, shines through in kaleidoscopic fashion.

TASTING NOTES

The land that is home to Block S2 was formed rather dramatically by submarine avalanches of shale and sandstone mixed with lava providing a mineral hotbed for the vines to tap into. With its deep golden colour and rich, earthy flavour profile, this is a serious Chenin Blanc. On the nose there are decadent aromas of burnt caramel and pie-crust...

Block W benefits from coastal influence at only 4.5km inland from False Bay and beds its roots in clay enriched subsoil with a coarse sandy topsoil. This wine is deep golden in appearance, displaying richness, finesse and power. Herbal aromatics are complemented by truffle notes, yet there is a layer of confected, tangy citrus fruit that lifts the wine. Very...
