PINOT NOIR, Drinking Now 2020

Scores

This has plenty of interest and textural detail with an attractive grain to the tannin texture. Plenty of baking spices and a hint of pepper on the nose. It's really succulent. Drink now.
92 Points, James Suckling

Elegant and plush, with fresh cherry flavors that are supple and smooth, accented by hints of cream soda and red licorice. Offers bright acidity and lingering clove nuances. Drink now through 2026.
92 Points, Wine Spectator

A cool note of menthol sits atop the otherwise spicy dark pinot fruit aromas that lead to rounded, supple and seductively textured middle weight flavors that possess good richness while delivering fine persistence on the sappy finale that carries its alcohol with almost no trace of warmth. While this well-made effort might reward a few years of cellaring it's already so good that it could be enjoyed now.
91 Points, Burghound

Tasting Notes

Cooled by the ocean but bathed in sunlight, there is a purity and vibrancy to the fruit that is unique to this region. The wine is silky smooth and sings with bright red cherry fruit and subtle savoury cherry pip notes adding depth and interest without detracting from its beauty, it is a wine that can’t fail to put a smile on every face. The ultimate crowd pleaser.

ProducerAstrolabe

Named after a 19th-century explorer’s ship, Astrolabe is Simon and Jane Waghorn’s voyage into winemaking exploration in New Zealand’s Marlborough region and is now 100% family-owned. The family-owned estate is rightly celebrated for wines that express the variety of their soil and the nuances of their terroir: from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys to the Kekerengu Coast. Astrolabe wines reflect the Waghorn’s innovative treatment of specific parcels and winemaking process to capture undiscovered qualities of individual grape varieties, resulting in some of the most pure and elegant wines from the region.
