Those lucky enough to have tasted back vintages of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville brim with enthusiasm for this flagbearer of the Cote de Beaune. In fact, a Burgundy collection would not feel complete without a section reserved for this notable estate. The Domaine embodies the focused, pure, clear cut wines of Volnay, whose strides towards perfection continue to make this a vital estate in a region where trends can change like the wind.
The Domaine's focus on excellence is emphasised by their embracing of biodynamics. They display an almost unparalleled level of respect for their vineyards, some of which date back as far as the earliest recorded plots in Burgundy. Ancient maps of the region show the legendary Clos des Dues as one of the first delineated plots in Burgundy recognised for its quality as far back as 1507. Their restrained use - almost to the point of mistrust - of new oak suits the delicate and fragrant style of Volnay.
These wines are delicate, red-fruited, perfumed and bright, all allied to a structure that allows the wines to blossom over a long drinking window. Their inimitable character identifies with the very DNA of Burgundy and the current proprietors fully recognise the role they play as guardians of this hallowed land.
I strongly encourage you to take a dozen to nestle in the cellar and a case or two to drink at home now. This is red Burgundy at its finest.
