La Rioja Alta is a must for any Rioja fan. Marrying the best of traditional, artisanal Rioja production with the latest modern techniques in both vineyard and winery, these wines excel for their richness, complexity and accessibility.
The incredibly strict selection process and commitment to quality at every step is quite mesmerising. An on-site cooperage affords a level of precision and control that is integral to their philosophy. These American oak casks are carefully tended to with racking done by candlelight every six months.
Under the rules of the region, La Rioja Alta's Reservas could rightfully be labelled as Gran Reservas due to the extending barrel ageing. However, this honour is reserved for their two top cuvees, 890 & 904.
For the 890, only the best clusters are taken to the winery in small refrigerated boxes. Painstaking destemming and crushing is carried out before fermentation followed by a further selection process. 6 years in American oak barrels with 10 rackings concludes with a final selection from the best barrels for the ultimate blend.
By any ordinary measure the Reservas are remarkable. The Gran Reservas are legendary. A collection from this estate will reap rewards for many years to come.
