Arnoux-Lachaux 2014

Pascal and Charles are by their nature some of the cheeriest people in Burgundy but with another strong vintage safely in the cellars, their positivity is certainly justified. They reported similar yields overall to 2013 despite making a strict selection in the vineyards in order to eliminate the impact of the famous drosophile suzukii. Harvest started on 18th September and was completed in a week, with no rot in evidence at all. Satisfied with the ripeness of the vintage, a minimum of 40% whole bunches were included at vinification and the work in the cellar proceeded without incident, with all malolactic fermentation complete by the time of our June visit.

By the time we returned in November, the wines had been racked and were totally charming, showing themselves with ease and aplomb. In style, the similarity is drawn to a theoretical combination of 2011 and 2007 in terms of the forwardness and the fruit character but with more power in evidence. These are wines that will offer pleasure in their youth but that will age extremely well. Just how long, we asked? To answer the question, we were treated to a memorable tasting of some older wines, with 1964 Clos Vougeot perhaps the most exquisite Burgundy I have tried this year. In a good cellar, these 2014s are bottles that will create beautiful memories many decades from now.
