2015 Château Pontet Canet, 5ème Cru Pauillac

"A hypothetical combination of the 2010 and the 2009 "
Antonio Galloni

Mouton Rothschild’s cross street neighbour has truly performed in 2015. Alfred Tesseron’s approach of focussing on biodynamic practices and fastidious attention to detail has delivered. With cries of potential ‘wine of the vintage’ this is sure to extremely popular. The nobility of both the estate and the vintage is clearly evident. Its status as a super second is firmly intact. The undoubted prestige of the wine sits in contrast to the humility of its proprietor. Tesseron prefers to think of himself as a mere farmer.

Doing his utmost with his team to prepare the land and letting the wine speak for itself. With stellar vintages of the past, namely 2005, 2009 & 2010, trading at £895, £1,500 and £1,450 respectively the release price for the 2015 represents great value. From our tastings – especially compared to back vintages of 2014, 2013 and 2012 – the wine demonstrates a wonderful structural balance which is harmonious and complete. The accessibility on tasting was almost shocking. Such a complete wine already one can only imagine where this will go with appropriate bottle age.

A mesmerising combination of power, finesse, intensity and restraint all comes together. Just as the principles of biodynamics relies, in part, on celestial movements the stars have aligned to create a cuvee for Pontet Canet that is sure to enter into the echelon of great Bordeaux wines.

2015 Château Pontet Canet, 5ème Cru Pauillac

£795 Per 12 Bottles En Primeur
£397.50 Per 6 Bottles En Primeur

This year is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a pure and perfumed bouquet with small dark cherries, red plum and subtle violet scents, perhaps a little Margaux-like in style, the second showing demonstrating a little more red fruit character. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture on the entry. There is nicely judged acidity here, moderate depth, very supple tannin that lend this a silky texture. There is modest weight towards the second half, perhaps spicier than some of its Pauillac peers with an edgy, lightly peppered finish. It is an intriguing and complex, almost mercurial Pontet-Canet, a wine that I suspect will gain more weight during its élevage. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle and you should have a delicious, intellectual Pontet-Canet on your hands.

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2015 Pontet-Canet oozes class, finesse and pure pedigree. A hypothetical combination of the 2010 (for its dark fruit and tannic structure) and the 2009 (for its voluptuous fruit), the 2015 offers remarkable intensity, power and grace. A host of exotic floral and spice notes wrap around the dark, racy finish. In a word: magnificent! Drink 2022 - 2045

Dark purplish crimson. Very ripe start and then rather drying tannins on the end. Wild and lively but a little bit heavy. I'm looking for a little more freshness. There's austerity and astringency (because of the amphorae influence?) but I'm not sure it compensates for the lack of acidity. Savoury, salty finish. Distinctive. 13.5% Drink 2025-2040

Attractive and floral on the nose with perfumed red cherry and violet aromas, the palate is rich and concentrated with deep plum and blackberry flavours. Supple tannins and refreshing red currant fruit notes balance succulent fruit characters. Hints of wild herbs and dried fruits on the finish add depth and character. A wine which opens up in the glass to reveal layers of complexity, this wine will be delicious in a few years and should age very well. Drink 2018 -2028.
