2015 Lafon Rochet, Saint-Estèphe, 4ème Cru Classé

Lafon Banner

"There is little question Lafon-Rochet is one of the stars of Saint-Estèphe in 2015"
Antonio Galloni

Situated in close proximity to Cos d’Estournel and Lafite-Rothschild this is a property which has undergone an extensive revival since it was taken over by the Tesseron family in 1959. The advancements made at the estate, however, are not confined to the past. Since 2012 Jean-Claude Berrouet, who is best known for his time crafting the wine at Petrus, has been assisting at Lafon-Rochet.

Furthermore this is the first vintage where the wine has been made in the newly completed cellars and vat rooms. The result is a wine of depth and intensity that is a lovely expression of the appellation. Though this year it priced in between what the 2009 and 2010 can be bought for it certainly offers some of the best value in Saint-Estèphe.

2015 Lafon Rochet, Saint-Estèphe, 4ème Cru Classé

£300 Per 12 Bottles En Primeur
£150 Per 6 Bottles En Primeur

It has a dense blackberry and boysenberry scented bouquet that is a little more voluptuous than its peers. The palate is again quite dense with "stocky" tannin, obdurate and a little hard at the moment, structured and clearly a Lafon-Rochet that is built for the long-term. It will need several years to just lose its brutishness. Drink 2025 – 2050

One of the potential sleepers of the vintage, Basil Tesseron's 2015 Lafon-Rochet is a total knock-out. Explosive, deep and powerful, the 2015 possesses remarkable richness and intensity. A host of black cherry, smoke, gravel, menthol, tar and licorice notes abound. I tasted the 2015 four times over two weeks. During that time, the wine seemed to acquire more and more freshness as well as finesse. There is little question Lafon-Rochet is one of the stars of Saint-Estèphe in 2015. The blend is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Jean-Claude Berrouet consults.

An impressive 2015 with crunchy red berry fruit aromas with hints of tobacco. The palate has a core of dark blackberry and cassis fruits and a framework of firm tannins with a lively freshness on the finish and a seasoning of pepper and spice. One of the stars of the Saint-Estèphe tasting, this wine should age well over the next decade or two. Drink from 2018 – 2030.
