Château Clos Fourtet

‘What a fabulous Saint Emilion from Mathieu Cuvelier and his team.’

Neal Martin

Jumping from left to right we leap across to St-Émilion with the release of Château Clos Fourtet. In the hands of the Cuvelier’s since 2001 they have spared no expense in seeking to elevate the quality of the wine to new levels. With a focus on biodynamic practices and balance the results speak for themselves. The efforts are reflected in the highest ever scores the estate has received over the past decade including a perfect 100 points in 2009. Unlike some other St-Émilions which tend towards a burlier, richer style Fourtet has a distinct mineral edge of freshness allied to its naturally juicy fruit. This character makes the wine very special indeed and it was, therefore, unsurprisingly on of our team’s top picks of St-Émilion. Thoroughly recommended. Both well priced and delicious. Buy with confidence.

Last week Château Trottevielle’s release went almost unnoticed due to the quantity of wines offered. We feel this merits attention. A sumptuous wine with swathes of succulent fruit in perfect harmony with fragrant aromatics and firm but polished tannins. The points to price ratio is strong and the wine excellent. One of the oldest estates in St-Émilion has produced in 2015, a year which favoured the right bank, their best ever wine. Neal Martin has furnished it with the estate’s highest ever score. With parcels of vines at well over 120 years old there is a deep complexity to the wine which is enrobed in a complex robe of brambly, focussed fruit. This up and coming estate has truly hit its stride. Take advantage! This has taken many people by surprise – exemplary St-Émilion.

FourIt has a voluminous bouquet with sweet cassis and blueberry aromas, rather smudged with violets coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, ripe and voluptuous, dark chocolate infusing the red and black fruit with a touch of mint on the structured, graceful finish. What a fabulous Saint Emilion from Mathieu Cuvelier and his team - Clos Fourtet with breeding and class. It deserves 5-8 years in bottle.

The 2015 Clos Fourtet is unusually rich and sumptuous in this vintage. Exotic aromatics, a huge core of fruit and ample, soft contours give the 2015 much of its striking personality. Although quite racy and unctuous today, the 2015 is going to need a number of years to shed its baby fat before it is even close to showing all it has to offer. This is a compelling effort from the Cuvelier family and consulting winemakers Stéphane Derenoncourt and Julien Lavenu.
93-96/100, Antonio Galloni

A very elegant and approachable wine with lovely length and depth, the 2015 has an enveloping bouquet of ripe blackcurrants and raspberries with an attractive creamy vanilla note. On the palate, dark plum and ripe cassis fruits are balanced by silky smooth tannins which fill the mouth while exotic spices and a hint of dark chocolate on the finish add further complexity.

The 2015 Trottevieille is blend of 49% Merlot, 49% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 28 September and 9 October matured in 100% new oak. It has a very intense bouquet, tightly wound with red and black fruit, hints of truffle coming through with aeration and then it appears to calm down and achieve a wonderful level of definition. The palate is medium-bodied with superb clarity. It feels supple in the mouth, extremely pure and soaking up the new oak with ease. It has a lively orange sorbet and red fruit-driven finish that is silky smooth in texture, thanks to the fineness of the tannin. Cellar this for 5-8 years minimum and then revel in this ascendant Saint Emilion for the next three or four decades.
