Château Cos D’Estournel 2015

‘A wine of cool sophistication and polish, the 2015 Cos d'Estournel is endowed with striking length and overall balance’
Antonio Galloni

Since the millennium, when the estate was purchased by Michel Reybier, Cos D’Estournel has undergone major renovations. The result being that today it has the most modern and advanced cellars & winery in all of Bordeaux. Everything is gravity fed with the intention of handling the wine as delicately as possible. The results stay true to the style of Cos – muscular, robust and intensely flavoured – but with added focus and purity of expression.

The vineyards of Cos D’Estournel are separated from those of Lafite-Rothschild only by a stream. It is the merging of this special terroir and the concerted quest to achieve greatness, with no expense spared, that elevates this wine. True to form the 2015 has broad shoulders yet offers new found layers of refinement evident in the pretty aromas and spice-laden berry fruit.

2015s edition of Pagodes de Cos has taken notes from its elder sibling. It shares the bold berries and fresh, fragrant flavours and aromatics. Jancis Robinson earmarks this as a ‘Lovely top tip for early-maturing wine. GV?’. The perfect accompaniment to this estate’s first wine. A couple of cases of each will ensure you can glimpse the future of the Grand Vin whilst it slumbers in the cellar.

Cos (1)

Deeper in color than the 2015 Pagodes, it has a very pure bouquet with tightly knitted blackberry, blueberry and violet scents, perhaps just a little Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity and harmonious in the mouth. What it does not quite deliver is the complexity of a top-tier Cos d'Estournel or the peacock's tail of flavors on the finish, which feels linear and conservative compared to its peers in more southerly appellations. You feel as if the vintage put a tight leash on this Saint Estèphe grandee. There is pedigree in this Grand Vin for sure and it is bound to give up to 20 years of pleasure.

A wine of cool sophistication and polish, the 2015 Cos d'Estournel is endowed with striking length and overall balance. Silky tannins support a core of graphite, smoke, licorice, incense, tar and dark spice. The 2015 is perhaps not as aromatically nuanced or expressive as in the very best years (although that may develop in time), but it offers terrific persistence through to the finish. Finesse and nuance are the key signatures in the 2015 Cos. Only 39% of the crop went into the Grand Vin, as opposed to the more typical 50% or so.

Pagodes

It has a generous bouquet of earthy, sous-bois-tinged black fruit, delineated if not as intense as the 2014 I recall from 12 months ago. The palate is medium-bodied and shows a little more sophisticated than the aromatics, principally because of the appealing fineness of the tannin and how well the oak is enmeshed into the fruit. That lends it a smooth and silky texture, and I suggest that after 2-3 years in bottle, this should drink nicely for up to another decade.

A big, enveloping wine, the 2015 Pagodes de Cos wraps around the palate with serious depth and intensity. The flavors are rich, voluptuous in this bold Saint-Estèphe. Mocha, black cherry, plum, licorice and menthol meld into the voluptuous, creamy finish. This is a highly appealing second wine from Cos. The blend is 46% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.
