Château Gazin

Bordeaux -chateau Gazin

Today we are greeted by our first release of a 2015 Pomerol. Château Gazin is an archetypal Pomerol defined by a romantic rusticity that offers both charm and polish. It shares an excellent location on the plateau of Pomerol, its vineyards rubbing shoulders with illustrious neighbours Petrus and L'Evangile as well as being just over the road from Lafleur.

Few are aware, but so favourable are its soils and vines that in 1969 Petrus bought a small portion of land from Gazin. More recently investment in a new cuvier along with more rigorous selection and separate vinification of individual parcels has allowed greater precision which shows in the wines. The terroir of Gazin is gravel with clay, iron and sand in the soil. T

his is de rigeur for Pomerol but importantly there are also patches of blue clay on the property as well. This is the most valued soil type in Pomerol and it runs through the very finest estates in the appellation. The extremely high proportion found at Pétrus is credited in part as giving this its defining colour and intensity.

This rubs off on Gazin whose brooding, lush berry fruit is beguiling in 2015. Today the former winemaker of clos L’Eglise, Mickaël Obert, is at the helm and making wines which embody a deeply traditional style which is less common today. Often one of the best value Pomerols the 2015’s price compares favourably to great vintages of the past and is sure to be snapped up by savvy Claret aficionados.

A classic Gazin with a bouquet of plump blackberry and red berry fruits with hints of spice and tobacco. On the palate, intense dark berry flavours and an attractive savoury character on the finish are balanced by supple tannins. The 2015 will be approachable in a few years but will also age well. Drink 2018 - 2028. 17.5/20 points, Armit Wines

Bright crimson. Appetising and savoury on the nose. Much drier than most Pomerols. Racy and mineral. 17/20 Points, Jancis Robinson
