‘Pomerol, again, is the undoubted right-bank star of 2015’ declared Jancis Robinson. Château Le Gay is an estate with superb pedigree. Located in a true sweet spot of the Pomerol plateau, neighbouring the legendary Château Lafleur and La Fleur Petrus, this is a wine which is almost regal in its expression. Recent years have shown a surge in quality – which was not low to begin with! This is the first year since an entirely new winery has been completed and the micro-vinification has enabled an even greater degree of control and influence which really shines through in the wine. It is rich and refined in equal measure.

This can clearly be labelled as a wine that is currently underrated. Fortuitously this is reflected in its very reasonable release price. During this Bordeaux campaign we have considered wines good value when they offer a discount of close to 20% against the current market price of the equivalent 2005. Le Gay’s 2015 price offers a 40% discount on 2005 and a 25% discount on 2009! Yet it is rated the same as the 2005 and 2009 as such this offers exceptional value. Château Le Gay 2015, Pomerol £760 Per 12 Bottles En Primeur £380 Per 6 Bottles En Primeur £390 Per 3 Magnums En Primeur £770 Per 6 Magnums En Primeur The 2015 Le Gay comes from the 6.5-hectare Pomerol estate, of which 2.09 hectares are currently being restructured. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked from 27 September until 8 October at one degree lower alcohol than Montviel; it has a fragrant bouquet with delineated red cherries, crushed strawberry and hints of vanilla from the 100% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, ripe and rounded in the mouth, very well balanced and very smooth. This just glides across the mouth and once that new oak has been absorbed, this will be a gorgeous Le Gay to behold. Do not overlook this Cru because it has been on a roll in recent years.
