Pieve Santa Restituta, Brunello 2012 Release

We are delighted to announce the release of 2012 Brunello from Pieve Santa Restituta, the only wine released from this great estate in this vintage.

The wine is produced from the vineyards immediately surrounding the Pieve, which is located in the south west part of Montalcino, and grapes from a vineyard further north in Torrenieri. The combination of complex micro-climates and soils create wonderfully elegant wines with the capacity for long ageing.

2012 in Montalcino was a warm year which began with a mild winter followed by a dry spring and a hot summer. These conditions stressed some of the vines and favoured deep colours and ripe fruit flavours. Temperatures cooled at the end of August and there was some much needed rain which reinvigorated the vines and encouraged ripening, allowing the grapes to reach full maturity. Harvesting started early on 10th September, to preserve freshness, and was completed by the end of the month in perfect conditions. Although the grapes were beautifully ripe and healthy, not all the plots achieved the very standards of perfection required by the estate. Following a demanding tradition, Gaja decided not to produce Rennina and Sugarille, their famous single vineyard wines, blending them instead into the Brunello di Montalcino enriching it with character, intensity and finesse.

A very elegant wine which expresses the character of the estate’s best vineyards, the Brunello 2012 has an expressive bouquet with dark black cherry and ripe plum fruit characters mingled with hints of hazelnut, fresh almonds and wild herbs. On the palate, intense savoury fruit characters are balanced by lovely sweet tannins which lead to a long finish. A medium to full bodied wine with a refined structure, this wine has serious ageing potential but could also be enjoyed in a few years.
