CANTELE

For three generations, the Cantele family have been making wines in the Salento peninsula of Puglia. Having originally come from northern Italy, Giovanni Battista and his wife Teresa Manara decided to move to Salento and establish a winery in the late 1950s.

Now the whole family is involved and their energy and enthusiasm for what they do is contagious. Planted with 30 hectares of vines, with the primary focus on local and historical varieties such as Primitivo, Negroamaro and Fiano and later successes with international varieties, the area provides ideal growing conditions.

For three generations, the Cantele family has been making wines in the Salento peninsula of Puglia.

Having originally come from northern Italy, Giovanni Battista and his wife Teresa Manara settled in Salento having fallen instantly in love with the region during a visit in the 1950s. Today, the whole family is involved and their energy and enthusiasm for what they do is contagious.

The primary focus of their 50 hectares is on local and historical varieties such as Primitivo, Negroamaro, Fiano and Bombino, though they have also gone on to enjoy great success with international varieties. Long, sunny days and cooling sea breezes sweeping in from the Adriatic and Ionian seas have led to the production of wines which are rich, ripe and beautifully balanced.

Not satisfied with producing excellent wines, they have invested time and money into scientific research to advance quality in the entire region; from isolating the indigenous Negroamaro yeast strains to studying the sensorial impact of Brettanomyces, the Cantele family continue to work tirelessly in the advancement of quality. This avid attention to detail is not just found in the cellar, but also in the vineyards where they have stopped using pesticides and herbicides and are focusing on understanding the potential impact of global warming on their region.
