Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Perfumed scents of tobacco, tea leaves, balsam and spice. Velvety smooth on the palate with excellent depth and complexity with more layered flavours of leather, spice and balsam with polished tannins and refreshing acidity. This is a beautifully crafted, extremely elegant wine with great depth, finesse, structure and longevity. It has been cared for and nurtured at the La Rioja Alta estate with a maturation process lasting over eleven years to ensure that it is only released when ready to drink; equally it can continue to be enjoyed or cellared over the next 25-30 years. The 2001 vintage easily stands alongside the famed 1964 and 1973 vintages, and this is perhaps the finest vintage of Gran Reserva 904 that has ever been produced.
