Scores

Handsome magnums! Looks a little cloudy. Mid ruby. Absolutely classic mature rioja nose with a mixture of stewed strawberries and animal mulch (not quite manure!!). Manages to be both sweet and refreshing ? no excess of alcohol. Oak in retreat. A very clever purchase for holiday entertaining ? though some guests may be put off by the individuality of this wine. Very gentle finish. 13.5% Score: 17.5 Points Team Jancis Robinson

Tasting Notes

The wine is made up of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. Ruby coloured and perfumed with dark fruit, cinnamon, Christmas spice, figs and fresh espresso. The type of nose only the best aged Rioja can offer. The nose promises a lot, but the palate doesn't disappoint. Complex, dark berry compote and liquorice flavours dominate the initial first sip, followed by a lighter taste of freshly ground coffee, allspice and black cherry on the lengthy finish. The combination of spice and fruit give a delicate bittersweet finish that offers itself well to a slow cooked roast lamb or any barbequed meat. This wine will peak for the next 10-15 years, but can be enjoyed beyond 2030.

ProducerLa Rioja Alta S.A.

Formed by five families in the late 19th century, the La Rioja Alta S.A. winery is one of the most iconic names in Fine Wine, and a benchmark for the traditional style of Rioja. Their Tempranillo-led reds are aged for remarkably long periods in barrels from the producer’s cooperage, and they are one of the last remaining producers to rack their wines by hand and by candlelight – which they do every six months. While they always upheld standards and tradition, La Rioja Alta S.A. never stopped experimenting and pushing for better quality, offering some of the purest, more precise expressions of Tempranillo in the world.
