Scores

The 2005 Sassicaia is another strong effort from Tenuta San Guido. Medium in body, it reveals an understated, delicate expression of smoke, herbs, tobacco and sweet dark fruit. The wine possesses compelling harmony and a gorgeous sense of inner perfume that flows from start to finish. This is an outstanding showing in a very challenging vintage. Sassicaia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. Robert Parker

Tasting Notes

Very deep colour with a delicate mineral nose. On the palate the wine bursts with ripe blackcurrant fruit and elegant herbaceous notes, wrapped around a super fine, grainy tannic structure. As ever, beautifully dissolved oak and vanilla nuances merge with a haunting mineral quality. The core of acidity is ripe and assertive - lifting the cassis fruit emphasis and giving the wine a racy and elegant feel overall. The wine finishes with a long and energetic finish. A beautiful, expressive and forward Sassicaia, to be drunk from 2013 to 2025.

ProducerTenuta San Guido

Quietly, elegantly and almost involuntarily, the Incisa della Rocchetta family set to release the wine that would revolutionise the Italian wine scene creating a totally new genre: the Super-Tuscan. Tenuta San Guido is now a legendary estate and was first planted in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who noted the similarity between Bolgheri’s terroir and that of the Graves. When, in 1968, Sassicaia was finally commercially released, it took the fine wine world by storm. Cementing its iconic status, in 1994 it was granted its own appellation – Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
