Tasting Notes

This rocky, east-facing vineyard was formerly a lavender farm, although now only a few rows remain next to the young syrah vines. Although in a warm area, the Richards Family Vineyard’s proximity to the Sonoma Mountains gives it a much cooler climate than its AVA would suggest. The vines here are younger than the other vineyards, but it has already produced a number of distinctive and critically acclaimed wines.

Reviews & Scores

The 2011 Syrah Richard’s Family is a powerful, rich wine that spent 36 months in wood. It boasts lots of blackberry, black currant, licorice, forest floor and truffle-like notes. Opulent and full-bodied, it is an incredible success for this challenging vintage. Consume it over the next decade.

Intense aromas of blackberries and black cherries with a note of chocolate and spice. Velvety smooth on the palate with rich black fruit flavours, some notes of coffee and a touch of black pepper. Good chewy tannins to balance and lingering black fruit flavours on the finish.

TASTING NOTES

Modern but restrained fruit with a tremendous floral scent, dark chocolate and leather. Manages to tame the wild tannins of Nebbiolo, giving a fine abrasion on the palate and bright acidity. Remarkably delicate structure, and very much drinkable now.

TASTING NOTES

An extremely elegant wine with an intense bouquet of dark cassis and plums with a rich, smooth palate of juicy, ripe blackberry and plum flavours balanced by velvety tannins and a refreshing finish. This wine is delicious now and will age well for a further decade. Drink 2015 – 2024.
