Scores

Grassy up front, with plenty of green notes to the lime, lemon and melon flavors, showing tangy acidity. Fresh and roasted herb accents linger on the finish.
86 Points, Wine Spectator

Single vineyard in the Coastal hills of Kekerengu, hand picked, wild yeast, barrel ferment. Both capsicum and riper citrus notes. Limey freshness then a little sweet/sour on the palate, as if it were not bone dry (perhaps just fruit ripe), though it finishes dry-tasting and zesty and has good persistence. Tasting this again in London with a little more time to focus, I started to notice the barrel ferment character more and found it brought real depth and complexity and a more profound that I had overlooked at first because this is definitely in the more subtle camp of the 'wild bunch' of alternative styles. I upped my score because I can see there is both complexity and intensity without unwanted sweetness. Fine creamy finish but still fresh.
17.5/10 Points, Jancis Robinson

Tasting Notes

Powerful passionfruit, guava and limoncello flavours, and a chalky, mineral texture. This wine will continue to develop rewarding flavour and bottle complexity with ageing. To be drunk with seafood of all types (especially oysters), leafy-summer salads, or as an aperitif.

ProducerAstrolabe

Named after a 19th-century explorer’s ship, Astrolabe is Simon and Jane Waghorn’s voyage into winemaking exploration in New Zealand’s Marlborough region and is now 100% family-owned. The family-owned estate is rightly celebrated for wines that express the variety of their soil and the nuances of their terroir: from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys to the Kekerengu Coast. Astrolabe wines reflect the Waghorn’s innovative treatment of specific parcels and winemaking process to capture undiscovered qualities of individual grape varieties, resulting in some of the most pure and elegant wines from the region.
