BASILICATA

The region of Basilicata borders Campania, Puglia and Calabria in the south of Italy. Whilst its climate is relatively harsh, the cool mountainous region produces wine with with vivid, fresh aromas. Despite Basilicata only producing one DOC wine, Aglianico del Vulture is one of the best known and highly regarded of Italian reds. The best wines from the area are full bodied, richly textured with a firm tannic structure and intense fruit aromas. The Aglianico grape prefers soils of volcanic origin, as well as dry and sunny locations which is why it gives some of its best results in the...

region. It is an early budding, late ripening variety and in the right hands can produce very long-lived wines of intensity and finesse.

Hailing from the mineral rich soils of Basilicata owing to the ancient volcano here, this wine displays wild berries, forest floor and a distinct mineral quality on the nose. A relatively high altitude leads to very fresh acidity and lively tannins. Deliciously crunchy red fruits, cranberry, liquorice and delicate savoury characters, all lead into a wonderfully fresh and mineral finish.
