BASILICATA

The region of Basilicata borders Campania, Puglia and Calabria in the south of Italy. Whilst its climate is relatively harsh, the cool mountainous region produces wine with with vivid, fresh aromas. Despite Basilicata only producing one DOC wine, Aglianico del Vulture is one of the best known and highly regarded of Italian reds. The best wines from the area are full bodied, richly textured with a firm tannic structure and intense fruit aromas. The Aglianico grape prefers soils of volcanic origin, as well as dry and sunny locations which is why it gives some of its best results in the...

region. It is an early budding, late ripening variety and in the right hands can produce very long-lived wines of intensity and finesse.

Modern but restrained fruit with a tremendous floral scent, dark chocolate and leather. Manages to tame the wild tannins of Nebbiolo, giving a fine abrasion on the palate and bright acidity. Remarkably delicate structure, and very much drinkable now.

Savoury more than fruity. Very slow to open up on the palate too, with minerally cherry fruit. Subdued perfumed finish with clinging tannins. Elegance and grip.
