BURGUNDY & CHABLIS

The Burgundy wine region has always fascinated and frustrated in equal measure. For every eulogising, life-changing proclamation from someone realising wine nirvana, there is some poor soul somewhere bashing their head in perplexity. At its best, Burgundy wine can provide the ultimate - the transcendental, mystifying, unexplainable pleasure that only truly great wine can bring. But at its worst, Burgundy wine can be an expensive mistake, bring disillusion and even provoke anger.

TASTING NOTES

A refreshing and energetic wine with lovely pure fruit, there is an added tension and direction here. A bright bouquet of white stone fruits leads to a refreshing palate with lively green apple flavours underscored by a lean mineral character which leads to a long finish.

TASTING NOTES

The 2013 vintage was very difficult vintage to manage, with a heavily reduced crop after the hail. This superb White Burgundy has a lovely perfume, and very Puligny-Montrachet in style. The really heightened fruit and exciting aromatics dance across the palate. This is a marvellous wine from a master winemaker and will be excellent to drink now after a short...

Appealing and expressive, this wine has a pretty bouquet of white flowers with a hint of acacia honey and dried fruits. On the palate, succulent white peach and stone fruit characters are balanced by a chalky mineral quality which gives a sense of controlled elegance.

TASTING NOTES

The Bourgogne Blanc, which had completed its malo by springtime, is already in bottle and offers good fruit weight and mid-palate density but plenty of freshness too. The nose is pure and floral and the wine bounds along energetically, with a crisp, well-defined finish suggesting versatility, equally at home on its own as with simple foods. Drink from 2014.

An east to south facing vineyard with deep calcerous soils, this wine has a refined mineral character which is typical of this vineyard. Produced from a south facing parcel at the extreme south of Les Vaillons, this unique wine is vinified in a concrete egg to give an additional layer of complexity. Burgundy Region

The Burgundy region is not the region of choice for the unadventurous or risk averse! How then to navigate the minefield? Our advice has always been, and still is, to get to know the growers. It sounds like simple advice but with so many producers there are so many types of Burgundy wine. From powerful négociant houses to the new breed of micro négociants, from large, historic estates to tiny family domaines, you need to know where to turn and who can be relied upon.

At Armit Wines we work with growers who we count amongst our friends. These are by definition, people that won't let you down. These are personal contacts gleaned from years of visiting, talking, tasting and building relationships. Some friendships grow whilst others fade of course but the great ones endure: legendary, ground-breaking Burgundy wine growers such as Anne-Claude Leflaive and Guillaume d'Angerville; superstars such as Pascal Lachaux, Christophe Roumier, Jean-Marc Roulot and the Raveneau brothers; under-appreciated talents such as Patrick Bize and Richard Fontaine.
