BURGUNDY & CHABLIS WINE REGION

The Burgundy wine region has always fascinated and frustrated in equal measure. For every eulogising, life-changing proclamation from someone realising wine nirvana, there is some poor soul somewhere bashing their head in perplexity. At its best, Burgundy wine can provide the ultimate - the transcendental, mystifying, unexplainable pleasure that only truly great wine can bring. But at its worst, Burgundy wine can be an expensive mistake, bring disillusion and even provoke anger.

TASTING NOTES

A welcome return after the 2015 crop was entirely lost to hail. As ever this is the most delicate of the Grands Crus, made entirely without oak.  The profile here is distinctly of oyster shell and a lovely hint of sea salt salinity. This is a wine of gorgeous purity and finesse; intensely chablisien with a chalky, zesty finish.  A delicate expression...

Made from 50 year old vines, this is full flavoured yet very elegant with deep red cherry and dark plum fruit flavours. Integrated, velvety tannins and a hint of spice and leather on the finish add complexity and depth. This will be delicious in the next few years. Drink from 2016.

TASTING NOTES

Always a strong wine in the line-up, the 2011 edition is once again lively, energetic and punchy and eager to show its personality. This is more playful than many wines with the emphasis on pleasure rather than patience. It is an all-rounder that is impossible to dislike. Drink from 2014.

Pure and bright on the nose with spring blossom and delicate citrus, the palate shows more weight with lemon peel and preserved lemon and complex notes of almond.  Lovely balance between fruit weight, freshness and a fine vein of acidity.  Drink from 2019.Armit Wines

TASTING NOTES

If the ability to make a good Bourgogne Rouge is the mark of a quality winemaker, this is a case in point. Very juicy with purity of raspberry and red cherry fruit and good weight. With freshness and lift and a crunchiness to the finish, this is very moreish Bourgogne Rouge.

TASTING NOTES

A supple, attractive and very enjoyable white Burgundy. This is a relatively simple style but it still has a mineral backbone and plenty of acidity to balance the approachable sweet fruit. Not the most complicated 2009 in the range but wonderfully enjoyable right now. Delicious.

Burgundy Region

The Burgundy region is not the region of choice for the unadventurous or risk averse! How then to navigate the minefield? Our advice has always been, and still is, to get to know the growers. It sounds like simple advice but with so many producers there are so many types of Burgundy wine. From powerful négociant houses to the new breed of micro négociants, from large, historic estates to tiny family domaines, you need to know where to turn and who can be relied upon.

At Armit Wines we work with growers who we count amongst our friends. These are by definition, people that won't let you down. These are personal contacts gleaned from years of visiting, talking, tasting and building relationships. Some friendships grow whilst others fade of course but the great ones endure: legendary, ground-breaking Burgundy wine growers such as Anne-Claude Leflaive and Guillaume d'Angerville; superstars such as Pascal Lachaux, Christophe Roumier, Jean-Marc Roulot and the Raveneau brothers; under-appreciated talents such as Patrick Bize and Richard Fontaine.
