JURA

Situated between Burgundy and Switzerland, the small vineyard of Jura stretches through the medieval towns of Arbois, Chateau Chalon and l’Etoile. This region, well known for its Comté, is home to an inimitable style of wines. While the vineyard shares similarities with Burgundy - a continental climate, limestone-rich soils and the burgundian grapes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – it is their differences and contrasts that make Jura wines unique in France. The climate can be much more rigorous and contrasted than in Burgundy with very cold winters and hot summers. The plots, relatively distant from each other, lie at an...

altitude of 250 to 500 metres between the plains of the Bresse region and the Jura Mountains, and are essentially made of marls. But Jura’s main characteristic lies in its local grapes varieties: Savagnin gives very distinctive white wines with a nutty and spicy character. Jura also produces light reds from Poulsard and deeper styles from Trousseau.

At last, the winemaking: barrel ageing is a specific art in Jura as the oak exalt the whites singularities. The Vin Jaune is a result of this particular ageing process where the wine is aged for at least six years under the flor.

Jura has other specialities: a light sparkling, Cremant du Jura; a desert wine made from dried grapes, Vin de Paille; and a liqueur wine, the MacVin.

The 2014 Arbois Trois Cépages is a red blend of the three red grapes from Jura: Pinot Noir (60%) and the rest Trousseau with just 5% Poulsard, aged for one year in used barriques. It’s very pure and clean with aromas of wild red berries; it’s light colored, clean, precise with tension, with higher acidity than a Burgundy, and with...

"The bunches for the 2013 Arbois Chardonnay were pressed directly and the must fermented in barrel, where it also aged for one year. Only 10% of the barrels are new here. The oak is very well integrated; it's a pure style of white, you can say it’s a Burgundy style, but it certainly has fresher acidity and the oak does...

Vin de Paille is the region's 'straw wine.' A wine made by concentrating the grapes (Chardonnay, Savagnin and Poulsard) on straw mats to raisins concentrating the flavours. It takes 100 kilograms of grapes to produce just 10 litres of Vin de Paille meaning the wine is very limited. Flavours are rich and concentrated with a flavour spectrum from honey and...

A blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 35% Trousseau and 5% Poulsard. Trousseau and Poulsard are local varieties that are perhaps overly rustic when made as single varietals, certainly to a Volnaysien palate. Here, in harness with the noble Pinot Noir, their best attributes are allowed to shine. On the nose, there are the fragrances of pepper, smoke and brown spices...

This is a wonderful expression of the unique profile of Chardonnay produced in Jura. Comprising perfectly balanced green and red apple, a hint of sweet, almost cinnamon spice and an underlying walnut character the L’Etoile is a beautifully unique wine. A fine backbone of acidity lifts what is a rounded and textured palate to provide a real depth of flavour...
