LOIRE

The Loire valley is perhaps France's most overlooked wine producing region. It is an extremely large and diverse area with 87 appellations. It is the largest white wine region in France and the second largest region for sparkling wine. The climate is cool, producing delicate, crisp wines, often with high acidity. Its expansiveness and diversity result in a variety of different wine styles, from the crisp, mineral Sancerres and Muscadets to the powerful, red Chinons and the sweet Coteaux du Layon wines, all of which deserve more attention than they currently receive in the international wine market.

TASTING NOTES

A striking, crystalline nose evolves from floral, to spice to orange peel and then white pepper. 2016 really seems to be a demi-sec vintage in particular, as this Le Mont demonstrates.  Whilst there is sweetness, the wine is exceptionally pure and light on its feet. An exquisite juxtaposition between white orchard fruit and a minerally citrus frame; the fine vinous...

Upfront honeysuckle and sweet grapefruit give way to pure green apple and gunflint.  The wine has a hint of tannin and huge balancing freshness.Armit Wines

TASTING NOTES

The nose here is exceedingly decadent with passionfruit and ripe mango. Lush, concentrated and viscous but with a tempering acidic backbone, this is a truly exciting wine. The Haut Lieu style means that this exceptionally smooth wine will be very hard to resist in its youth.

TASTING NOTES

A notch up in intensity from its Haut-Lieu sibling; pink grapefruit and bergamot vie for attention here.  This Clos du Bourg Moelleux is so complex and thrilling, it envelopes the senses in orange blossom, patisserie, melon and spice.  If it weren’t for the fantastic acidity, the concentration here would be almost liqueur-esque in depth, but that nervy energy comes through...

TASTING NOTES

As JB said when we tasted together, “No comment, it is great”.  Many a true word said in jest.  The Le Mont Moelleux is exceptional and has a long life to come.  Rich texture leads in to a massive wave of green apple and spice.  It is supported by minerality, freshness and smokey, savoury inflections.  This is a wine with...

TASTING NOTES

This is an almost nostalgic wine that hints at childhood memories of baked apple, honeyed raisin, pear drop and fresh apple sauce.  Nuanced layers emerge with grapefruit pith and juicy conference pear alongside spun sugar, nectarine, and white peach.  Its soaring crest of acidity cleanses all the plump sugared fruit and marries beautifully with the accents of spicy botrytised apricot....

TASTING NOTES

Soft orchard fruits, white flowers and citrus peel create an attractive and comforting aroma alongside subtle mineral-inflected scents. The mousse is incredibly fine, giving a gentle, mouthfilling texture which holds the taut, pithy citrus and camomile flavours in check. There is a wonderful fleshy quality which is balanced by soft toasty notes and a remarkable freshness which lasts long onto...

TASTING NOTES

Hedonism in a glass. This is a superb effort which combines dried tropical fruit aromas with sweet spice. There is such complexity here with a botrytis spice, and stewed rhubarb. The intense sweetness is complemented by a well-integrated acidity and enormous concentration. This wine will, quite possibly, live for 40+ years. A herculean effort.

winemaking regions stretch right across the Southern coast of France. Provence is perhaps the warmest wine region in France and produces mainly rosé and red wine. Provence wine has often been compared with the wines of Southern Rhône, as they share both grapes and, to some degree, style and climate.

The Languedoc region is primarily red wine territory, although some rosé is produced, as well as increasing amounts of attractive whites. The area was transformed by the Vin de Pays classification of 1979, permitting the cultivation of new grape varieties and the opportunity to rival the New World crusaders with varietal labelling.
