This historic region is the hub of the South African wine making scene, the main viticulturists, Viticultural Research Institute, Wine & Spirit Board and most of the commercial wholesalers are to be found here. Established in 1679 the region is probably best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Pinotage, Stellenbosch also produces some excellent whites, Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays.
