TUSCANY

Tuscany, along with Piedmont, is the foundation upon which Italy’s wine reputation has been built. In total, there are 29 wines with DOC status produced in the region. It is also home to 7 of Italy’s DOCG areas, and many premium non-classified wines.

Chianti accounts for a large part of the region with the most prestigious DOCG Chianti Classico wines coming from the beautiful central hills, which provide a tempering effect on the summertime heat, many vineyards are planted on the highest slopes. The principal grape variety is Sangiovese, alongside other indigenous and international varietals.

TASTING NOTES

Undoubtedly the star of the show for me, this wine bears all the hallmarks of beautiful, intense Tuscan Cabernet. Showy and rounded with a wild, spicy and concentrated texture. There are hints of smoke and tar beneath the dense, sweet core of fruit and exotic spice. The finish is long, rich and impressive. Wonderfully youthful in its freshness – quite...

TASTING NOTES

Tua Rita’s unique “seaside Sangiovese” is an enchanting expression of the vineyard’s location, named after the beautiful pink marble (“the pearl of the wood”) on which it is grown.  Warm and elegant, the 2015 Perlato displays roses, lavender, sour cherry and hedgerow fruit. The velveteen tannins are balanced by a bright, refreshing acidity. There is a kiss of sweet, supple...

TASTING NOTES

Much more open and expressive than when we tasted in November at the estate, the 2010 showed classic blackcurrant and cassis notes and that hallmark bright note of bright cherry. Deep, spicy and focused, this is an elegant and concentrated wine that displays violets and floral aromas alongside a great, thick texture and tightly wound tannins. There is so much...

TASTING NOTES

Guidalberto, the second wine of Sassicaia, reflects the style and elegance of the first wine without the need for extensive ageing. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, the aromas of the 2011 are complex and persistent with layers of dark cherry fruits intermingled with herbs and spices. The palate is supple and refined with sweet, ripe dark...

TASTING NOTES

This beautifully evolved wine retains its incredible core of pure dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, spicy dried herbs and tea leaves, framed by tightly knit tannins and a svelte, gentle texture. There is incredible concentration here but a gentle, almost ethereal quality lingers in the mouth and creates a heady, aromatic perfume. Elegant yet powerful, this is a stunning wine...

TASTING NOTES

This is Brunello in all but age; made from declassified Sangiovese and produced in the same way and style as its older, more age-worthy brother. The 2015 ‘Ignaccio’ is a hallmark Rosso di Montalcino. Quintessential floral and earthy notes accompany Il Marroneto’s sour-cherry fragrance and an invigorating freshness. It has just the right structure to be enjoyed immediately, but can...

this area is huge with industrial cooperatives alongside tiny family farms and as such quality can vary substantially. To the south near the town of Siena is Montalcino, where again Sangiovese is key, though here it is a local strain, Brunello, or more officially Sangiovese Grosso, that produces Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.

Historically Brunello needed considerable ageing, and the minimum age before release is still 4 years. However Brunello is now being produced that is delicious from release as well as having good potential for ageing – the best of both worlds and an essential development in the face of changing modern tastes.

Coastal Tuscany, particularly the area around the beautiful village of Bolgheri really hit the map in the 1970s as a new class of wines known as “Super Tuscans” emerged. These wines were made outside DOC/DOCG regulations, using international varieties, some were considered to be of outstanding quality and received high scores from the critics and commanded surprisingly high prices for the time.

The two most renowned Super Tuscans to this day are Sassicaia and Ornellaia, for which Armit are the exclusive UK agents! Bolgheri today is synonymous with winemaking of the highest order. Exceptional terroir along the coast complemented by the wonderful Mediterranean climate provide perfect conditions for vines not only in Bolgheri and the Maremma but down to Suvereto and beyond.
