Few properties conjure the magic of the Tuscan countryside quite like Castello di Argiano, home of the Sesti family.
Perched on a hilltop surveying the southern slopes of Montalcino, this is a prominent estate – in both senses of the word – whose wines are as charming as the family themselves.
In the wonderful 2012 vintage, there is much to admire here.
Giuseppe Sesti is no ordinary winegrower. As if a successful career as an astronomer and part-time opera director were not enough, his tireless interest in the local countryside led him to try his hand at winemaking too.
Thankfully for us, the result is simply mesmerising Brunello.
Giuseppe’s unparalleled knowledge of the moon’s influence is applied to his vineyards and winemaking. This is pure, unbridled classicism. Speaking to Giuseppe and his daughter, Elisa, one simply cannot fail to be enchanted. His family’s love of the land and thirst for good wine is infectious.
It is no coincidence that Sesti’s wines are widely acknowledged to be some of the finest that Montalcino has to offer. They are firm favourites of ours, and they should be favourites of yours too.
We urge you to buy these stunning Brunellos on release and, if you can, take a trip to Tuscany to experience the magic for yourselves.
Tasted blind. Mature mid ruby with watery orange rim. Cherry nose with real depth and hints of malt. Succulent and concentrated and with fine, polished tannins. Almost burgundian in style and elegance. Impressive balance.
