It shows (even) younger and more concentrated than the 2004 904, a darker shade of red and a somehow backward and reticent nose (relatively speaking) of forest floor, cold bonfire, antique shop, truffles, game, sandalwood, nutmeg and clove. The fruit is also a little darker and the palate more austere, but still showing vibrant and supple, with clean flavors and a great finish. This is my favorite modern time 890. Bravo! Tasting Notes

Poised, structured and brooding with hints of raspberry fruit peeking out behind the sumptuously rich, silky and suave profile. This will certainly benefit from ageing but it is not a crime to open one today. There are already hints of secondary development and the savoury, iron-y, umami character of great Rioja is now there alongside the rich, delicious fruit. This is very special, one of the best 890s we can remember. A momentous wine.

Their Tempranillo-led reds are aged for remarkably long periods in barrels from the producer’s cooperage, and they are one of the last remaining producers to rack their wines by hand and by candlelight – which they do every six months. While they always upheld standards and tradition, La Rioja Alta S.A. never stopped experimenting and pushing for better quality, offering some of the purest, more precise expressions of Tempranillo in the world.
