Despite three years in this bodega's particularly well-maintained barrels, this wine is a remarkable dark crimson. Intense, almost cheesy nose. Rich and concentrated with a very firm Tempranillo expression and some smooth, chocolatey texture. Yet it is lively and fresh on the finish. This is for those who may want to cellar the wine. A bit animal. Very beautifully balanced. But this is more animal than fruit. 13% Score: 16.5 Jancis Robinson

Tasting Notes

This is a blend of Tempranillo 95% and Mazuelo 5%, visually it is dark cherry red hue with a deep concentration. As always with Arana Reserva the cherry fruit aromas are in balance with a delicate line of tobacco, cocoa and sandal wood. The palate is a complex mix of fruit and savoury, the Mazuelo adds just a bit acidity to the wine creating a long mouth watering finish with silky tannins.

Formed by five families in the late 19th century, the La Rioja Alta S.A. winery is one of the most iconic names in Fine Wine, and a benchmark for the traditional style of Rioja. Their Tempranillo-led reds are aged for remarkably long periods in barrels from the producer’s cooperage, and they are one of the last remaining producers to rack their wines by hand and by candlelight – which they do every six months. While they always upheld standards and tradition, La Rioja Alta S.A. never stopped experimenting and pushing for better quality, offering some of the purest, more precise expressions of Tempranillo in the world.
