Tuscany 2014 Mix & Match Offer

One cannot fail to be enchanted by Tuscany. Its implausibly beautiful vistas are home to some of Italy’s greatest wines and winemakers. And we are fortunate to count many among our portfolio.

Last week, I travelled from the seaside towns of the Maremma right up into the hills of Chianti Classico tasting with producers. As the 2017 wines are now beginning their malolactic fermentations, we talked a great deal about the difficulties facing winemakers in these times of uncertain climate change. 2017 was one of the hottest seasons ever and harvests were, in many places, finished by the middle of September.

Just three years earlier, the 2014 vintage was defined by significant and testing work in the vineyards too; but this time due to cool, damp conditions. A generation ago, conditions like those of 2014 would have most probably resulted in green, austere wines. But huge advancements in farming and knowledge gained through experience have made that much less likely.

Having tasted countless examples of 2014 from across the region, what struck me was the ability of these very fine winemakers and, not forgetting, their viticulturalists to produce something extraordinary against the odds.

Le Pupille, Querciabella, Tua Rita, Ornellaia and Tenuta San Guido have all defied the somewhat sweeping assumptions that 2014 was a lowly vintage. In fact, in the hands of their talented winemakers, it is a stellar vintage, marked by precision, fine acidity and exemplary layers of Tuscan florality.

Put simply, among our producers, you will find Sangiovese at its most mesmerising best from Querciabella in Chianti Classico; alongside stunning, moreish Sangiovese from Tua Rita on the coast. Saffredi’s Cabernet comes in a refined, supple style at Le Pupille. And not to mention Querciabella’s famous white wine, Batàr, whose clean lines and white-peach freshness owe much to this cooler growing season.

The wines in this offer represent the most celebrated producers in Tuscany, any of which would be an enviable addition to one’s cellar.

They are proof that 2014 is a beautiful vintage for those who had the fortune and the foresight to be selective.
