New Release: 2015 Viña Ardanza, La Rioja Alta
“Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate (and often plain great) prices.” Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate
“Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.” Neal Martin
As the UK agent for La Rioja Alta, we are delighted to offer the new vintage of La Rioja Alta’s Viña Ardanza 2015 at an En Primeur release price of just £242 per 12 bottles IB. Ardanza has always been an Armit favourite, and at this special price of £20 a bottle (IB) it offers
almost incomparable value for money for immediate drinking or cellaring.
Twenty fifteen is regarded as a very fine vintage for Rioja. The weather was as close to perfect as the winery could have wanted, and the official Rioja DOC board have recognised it as a “Very Good” vintage. The 2015 was not awarded the status of Seleccion Especial
(unlike the 2010 vintage) as the winery do not want to over use this classification, but the 2015 is certainly on a par with the 2010.
Viña Ardanza 2015 is a blend of 78% Tempranillo from the La Cuesta and Montecillo vineyards in the Rioja Alta subregion, and 22% Garnacha from La Perdriza in Rioja Oriental. This Garnacha is the key to Ardanza’s structure, aromatics, and concentration: the vines are
actually higher in altitude than most of the Rioja Alta subzone, and sit on barren, free-draining soils made up with large pudding-stones similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The area is perfectly situated to grow the finest Garnacha. These two varieties are harvested and vinified
separately, ageing around three years in American oak barrels which are produced in-house by La Rioja Alta S.A.’s own cooperage.
Every berry that goes into Ardanza now goes through an optical selection process to ensure the highest quality product is made. The two varietals are then matured separately in American oak (Tempranillo 36 months, and the Garnacha for 30 months).
During the maturation, the wine is racked by hand and by candlelight; La Rioja Alta S.A. are one of the handful of producers still to use this traditional technique in Rioja which ensure supple tannins and the savoury flavours that so define their style.
The wine is aged long enough to qualify as a Gran Reserva, but as La Rioja Alta already have three Gran Reservas, and in order to keep the wine in this price point, it is labelled as Reserva.
We highly recommend getting hold of the 2015 Viña Ardanza for your cellars. Do get in touch as soon as possible to secure an allocation.
