Tasting Notes

Perfumed scents of tobacco, tea leaves, balsam and spice. Velvety smooth on the palate with excellent depth and complexity with more layered flavours of leather, spice and balsam with polished tannins and refreshing acidity. This is a beautifully crafted, extremely elegant wine with great depth, finesse, structure and longevity. It has been cared for and nurtured at the La Rioja Alta estate with a maturation process lasting over eleven years to ensure that it is only released when ready to drink; equally it can continue to be enjoyed or cellared over the next 25-30 years. The 2001 vintage easily stands alongside the famed 1964 and 1973 vintages, and this is perhaps the finest vintage of Gran Reserva 904 that has ever been produced.

Reviews & Scores

Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040.
Score: 96 Points

The palate is juicy and supple, but also quite profound, showing cherries, berries, spice, sweet herbs, some cedar and coconut from the oak, and a lovely sense of harmony and precision....

TASTING NOTES

"The 2015 offers seductive red fruits – wild strawberries, red cherries, plums and currants – all balanced by the judicious use of fragrant, vanilla-driven oak. There are also subtle notes of coffee, chocolate and forest floor, teased out with time in the glass. Many of La Rioja Alta’s wines are made with ageing in mind, but the Arana is the...

TASTING NOTES

An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry, cherry cola, potpourri, tobacco and exotic spices, plus a smoky mineral flourish. Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering lush red and blue fruit, spicecake, mocha and coconut flavors that firm up on the back half. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with resonating florality, gently chewy tannins and lingering oak spice notes....
