Scores

Riper and fruitier than their Cannubi. Still has the signature floral fragrance, but there is even more on the palate ? perfume, chocolate, violets, and tar ? the whole nine yards of Barolo. Fantastic. Score: 19/20 Richard Hemming (JancisRobinson.com)

Tasting Notes

The 2010 Villero demonstrates remarkable approachability. Somewhat softer and riper than the other two Crus but still with the Barolo trademark structure of tannins and acidity, it is perhaps the concentration of sweet cherry fruit and floral notes here that gives it this accessibility. A classic Barolo all round with roses, tar and violets all featuring heavily on the palate. Enjoyable over the next few years after decanting and with food but also able to develop for a decade or two, much in line with the Cannubi.

ProducerGiacomo Fenocchio

When Claudio Fenocchio succeeded his father Giacomo at the helm of the family business in 1989, the debate between modernist and traditionalists in Barolo was at its most acute. He decided to opt for a third approach, something we can call radical traditionalism. His wines were celebrated for being impressively approachable in youth while getting even better with age. Claudio represents the 5th generation of the Fenocchio family crafting elegant, true Barolos that capture the soul of his vineyards. Far from resting on his laurels though, he continues to push boundaries of quality and innovation while respecting his family legacy.
