Scores

Brilliant straw yellow. Beautifully focused nose of yellow and white fruit, hazelnut, brioche, lemon peel and vanilla. Same amazing focus and balance of extract and freshness, without anything dominating or sticking out. Just a little compact on the finish, but it will develop. Plain delicious. (WS) 14% Score: 18 Points Walter Speller from Jancis Robinson

Tasting Notes

The 2011 is a deliciously complex and aromatic wine with silky smooth textures and a refreshing finish. A bouquet of ripe stone fruits and apricots mingles with bright citrus, green apple and white flower blossom aromas. The palate is persistent and long with lovely, white peach and refreshing lemon fruit characters with a fine mineral note and a hint of white pepper and spice on the finish. There is a wonderful purity about this vintage and though it will be tempting to drink on release it has the capacity to age for a decade or two and will certainly gain in complexity.

The name Querciabella is entirely appropriate to this estate in Chianti, which is surrounded by a sheltering forest of magnificent trees. Sebastiano Castiglioni is at the helm of one of the most innovative wineries in Italy, spearheading vegan and biodynamic practices in his two estates. Helped by the incredibly talented South African winemaker Manfred Ing, Querciabella are releasing not only some of the purest expressions of Chianti Classico but also venturing into Super-Tuscan territory with Camartina and Palafreno. Querciabella are also responsible for one of the most acclaimed Italian whites, Batàr, alongside a range of exciting Maremma wines.
