Tasting Notes

A unique wine from pre-phylloxera, 100 year old Nerello Mascalese, whose yields are minute and produce less than half a bottle of wine per vine. The result is an extraordinary achievement. Powerful, concentrated morello cherry combines with violet, raspberry coulis and impressive herbal and spicy scents. There are full, mouthcoating tannins and incredible, wild florals alongside a crunchy acidity. The pot-pourri, balsam, minerals and fine texture are reminiscent of good Nebbiolo but with a soft, approachable elegance. This is a wine lover’s wine which should age gracefully and provide much enjoyment in the mid-long term. “This wine is soaring in character and quality and is fast on its route to becoming one of the icons of vino Italiano” according to Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate).

ProducerPietradolce

One of the rising stars in our portfolio, since its founding in 2005 Pietradolce has come to own one of the largest collections of pre-phylloxera vines on the active volcano Mt Etna – which are up to 120 years old. This ancient mountain commands the winery’s devotion and respect, the energy and nuance of the volcanic soils producing truly phenomenal wines. Owner Michele Faro and winemaker Giuseppe Parlavecchio focus exclusively on local varieties Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, producing a range of pure, terroir-driven wines roughly structured as Village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru. While the do offer an elegance and depth reminiscent of great Burgundy, they offer incredible value compared to the Cote d’Or.
