Scores

This wine is showing exceptionally well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot) opens to a full and generous bouquet and a beautifully rich and velvety appearance. This edition of Tenuta San Guido's mid-level wine offers a bigger aromatic profile, more texture and more volume as well. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to spice, tar, leather and sweet fruit at the end. The mouthfeel is elegantly shaped, silky and nuanced. This may well be the best vintage of Guidalberto I have yet to taste—and you can get this wine at a great price too. Drink Now-2030.

Tasting Notes

Guidalberto is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that carries the hallmark elegance and finesse that runs through Sassicaia, the sweet fruited Tuscan character of the Bolgheri area and the enticing aromas that Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are capable of creating together. Spending twenty months in one-third new oak barrels, this wine is irresistible two years from release yet has a proven track record of ageing well into a decade.

ProducerTenuta San Guido

Quietly, elegantly, and almost unintentionally, the Incisa della Rocchetta family released the wine that would revolutionise the Italian wine scene, creating an entirely new category: the Super-Tuscan. Tenuta San Guido is now a legendary estate, first planted in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who recognised the similarity between Bolgheri’s terroir and that of the Graves. When Sassicaia was finally released commercially in 1968, it took the world of fine wine by storm. Cementing its iconic status, it was granted its own appellation - Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC - in 1994.
